Spooky Forest Scene with Dancin’ Grim

Hello! Today, I’m sharing another Halloween card. This time, it’s something a little different than what I’ve already shared so far this season. I paired the new (I think), spooky but still adorable, Dancin’ Grim from Spellbinders with the Arched Forest embossing folder and die from Simon Says Stamp’s Stamptember release. I thought the arched limbs of the trees created the perfect focal point for him. I love all the dancin’ characters from Spellbinders because it’s so easy to add an interactive element to your cards. With the Grim, his robe moves back and forth, making it look like he’s floating even more. I love it. I used Distress inks, Mica Stains, and for the background, the Tim Holtz moon stencils and masks to bring this spooky forest scene to life. And, I couldn’t pass up the Spellbinders Halloween Sentiments. The “Love You to Death” is so cheeky and it’s my favorite. All the details for this card are listed below. Thanks for taking the time to stop by my little blog space!

STEPS

1.) I created the night sky first for this card using a moon stencil and mask with Distress Inks on an A2 card panel. I left the mask in place while not only ink blending but also while splattering the background with a little Liquid Stardust from Lawn Fawn and thinned white gouache paint.

2.) Next, I created the forest. I actually die cut the trees first, applied a few colors of Distress Inks with blending brushes and sprayed it with just a bit of water before embossing. The inks and the water spritzing left the cardstock just a little damp and caused the embossing to be more pronounced. When crafting, I usually end up doing things in an order not originally intended. It can sometimes give you better results and/or make the process easier. I die cut the trees again in brown cardstock so that I could stack them for some weight and dimension before attaching to the background panel. I thought about using foam squares to pop them up but I wanted the Grim to really be the focal point of the design.

3.) Next, I die cut all the elements for the Grim in white cardstock and used Distress Inks to color them. It’s hard to see but there is some grey added to the bones and his face to give some dimension to those pieces. There aren’t too many pieces and he’s fairly easy to assemble. All the hood pieces are meant to layer on top of each other but I wanted the black, inside portion to be inset, so I used that die to also cut out his hood. That way it sits inside the hood and only his skull face is floating on top. I applied some shimmering Mica Stain to his robe and it looks so amazing in real life. I assembled and adhered all the Grim pieces together and added a doubled-up foam square to the back of his hood for the interactive element to swing freely behind him. I attached him to the scene with a few more foam squares around his hood, being careful not to place them where they would block the interactive swing.

4.) Lastly, I heat embossed the sentiments on black cardstock and die cut them before using foam squares to attach them. And, of course, a little black heart for his robe finishes the card.
