Forest Silhouettes for Father’s Day

Hello and Happy Father’s Day! I’m excited to finally share this card I made for my dad featuring the Postage Collage Forest Sunset Stamp Set. This is one of five (I think) genius silhouette stamp sets from Waffle Flower’s April release, Blocks of Fun. And aren’t they fun? I fell in love with all of them but in the end settled for just this one because I thought it would make the perfect Father’s Day card. The landscapes, the animals, and the animal tracks are all separate stamps so you can build countless little scenes for your crafty projects. Check out all the supplies I used, listed below, and then how I used those supplies to create a perfect silhouetted Father’s Day card.

To start, I die cut the PC Die from white cardstock. Then, using the PC Blocks Stencil to mask the edges of each stamp, I ink blended a sunset sky using the Distress Inks listed above. Next, I chose the stamps I wanted to use for my forest scenes and stamped them using VersaFine Onyx Black Ink. I like to use this ink for sentiments, solid images, or anytime that I want a super crisp and clear impression and won’t be coloring with Copic markers as it’s not alcohol ink friendly. After stamping the scenes, I used a Copic Multiliner to fill in any areas that needed it. For example, in the top left scene, the tree wasn’t quite tall enough for the wolf to fit underneath, so I just extended the trunk of the tree. And the legs of the deer in the lower middle scene – I didn’t stamp the deer quite right, and he was hovering a bit, so I extended his legs so they would touch the ground.

The next step was to spatter the scenes with thinned white gouache paint for a starry sky. I did this after stamping the scenes, even though it was a bit tricky, because otherwise there would have been texture from the paint, and the stamping would not have turned out so clean. To spatter just the sky and not the stamped scenes, I created simple masks with post-it notes. They were basically in the shape of the scene but were definitely not perfect. Using these masks, along with the PC Blocks Stencil, allowed me to spatter just the sky for the perfect starry backdrop. Lastly, I stamped the panel with a variety of airmail icons to complete the postage theme.

Next, I trimmed a black cardstock panel to be just slightly larger than the postage collage panel and layered them together. Then I mounted this to a kraft woodgrain cardstock panel that I had stamped a few times with the animal tracks from the Forest Sunset set. To finish up my card design, I heat embossed the sentiment with white embossing powder and die cut it with the coordinating die before attaching it with a foam strip. Finally, I added a few white clay hearts for embellishment.
