All is Calm, All is Bright Northern Lights

What I love about cardmaking is the ability to use a variety of mediums and explore new techniques. Every card I make is different from the last, and this card is no exception.

For this project, I used the Hero Arts Northern Lights Polar Bears Bundle and iridescent embossing powder on an ink blended sky to create a monochromatic winter scene. It’s hard to see in the pictures, but the iridescent embossing powder is so beautiful the way it reflects the light with every tilt of the card. And, you will see it reflecting the light EVERYWHERE! The iridescent particles are so super fine that it ended up covering me and most of my work area. I think it took me longer to clean up than it did to make this card!

But, it was worth it because the embossing is really what makes this card. All the details are listed below, where you can see how quickly this project actually came together. Thanks for visiting!

STEPS

1.) I started with an A2 white cardstock panel and heat embossed the northern lights, the snowy ground and the sentiments with the iridescent blue embossing powder. For the snowy ground, I cut a mask to look like snowdrifts and applied the clear embossing ink with a finger dauber. After heat setting everything, I masked off the snowy area and then ink blended the sky with Distress Inks. I used a microfiber cloth to wipe away any ink sitting on the embossed areas. Then, I trimmed the panel slightly so when it was attached to a card base there would be a white frame around the scene.

2.) I stamped the polar bears and colored them with Copic markers, using neutral and warm grays. Then I die cut the bears and attached them with foam squares. I added some snowflakes in silver and blues for the finishing touches before adhering the panel to an A2 side-fold card base.
