Hello, friends! Today I’m sharing this cozy Fall Word Shaker card as part of the Pretty Pink Posh September Instagram Hop showcasing the latest fall collection. You’ll find warm plaids, cute critters, and plenty of autumn leaves in this release. I chose to pair the Fall Word Shaker with two new stencils, a bounty of fall die-cuts, and the gorgeous Woodland Wishes shaker beads. My first step was to do my stenciling. I stenciled the Windowpane Plaid pattern on a 4.25 x 5.5 inch piece of Powder blue cardstock with Stormy Sky blue ink for my background panel. Stormy Sky, which isn’t available anymore, is a grayish blue color, perfect for fall’s muted tones. If you can’t find a similar shade, try inking blue first and then going over it with a gray or light brown ink to destaturate the color. After stenciling, I distressed the panel by inking the edges and spattering it with Antique Linen and Gathered Twigs Distress Ink. I set this aside and then stenciled the Wheat Pattern on a piece of Alabaster cardstock with Antique Linen Distress Ink and die-cut the Fall Word Shaker pieces from it.
Next, I created the shaker. First I die-cut the Fall Word backer piece from the Windowpane Plaid panel, positioning it at a slight angle. Be sure to save the negative space from the letter A! Then I used this panel as a template to align the wheat-patterned letters onto a piece of plain cardstock (I think I used Powder cardstock, but you could use any color because you won’t see it) trimmed to 4.25 x 5.5 inches. This will be the base panel. I added foam tape and foam strips to this panel, going around the letters as best as I could. I didn’t completely enclose each letter, so it is basically just one big shaker that I filled with the Woodland Wishes Shaker Beads. To finish up the shaker element, I attached a piece of acetate on the reverse side of the plaid panel, covering the Fall Word opening, and placed it on the base panel with the foam tape.
With the shaker element done, it was time to address the rest of the card design. First, I inlaid the framing pieces of the letters, gluing them onto the acetate. Don’t forget to add the negative space of the letter A! Then I die-cut an acorn, pinecone, sunflower, and multiple leaves from the Fall Bucket and Fall Holder Additions sets. Before assembling them, I added shading to the pieces with a darker coordinating ink color and also distressed the pieces a bit by applying light brown ink all over to desaturate the color. For the most part, I just used whatever color was leftover on my brown blending brush. When I was finished inking and assembling the die-cuts, I adhered them to my card front with either a liquid adhesive or, for a few of them, thin foam squares for added dimension.
Next I added the sentiment. Using cream embossing powder, I heat-embossed the sentiment on Powder cardstock and then die-cut it with the coordinating die. After die-cutting, I distressed the cardstock by lightly blending in Stormy Sky ink and Antique Linen Distress Ink around the edges and then attached it to my card front. Lastly, I adhered my card front to a top-fold card base.
