Celebrating 23 Years of Spellbinders

Hello, hello! Spellbinders is celebrating 23 years this month, and to celebrate this incredible papercrafting company, I shopped my stash for some of my favorite Spellbinder’s dies, invited a few other papercrafting companies, and reimagined them for a fresh, new card design. I’m thrilled with how this sweet mashup turned out because mashups aren’t always so successful, at least for me. Check out the supplies I used for this card, and then I’ll walk you through my process.

My idea for this card design began with wanting to create a card with a cheerful summery vibe. I thought strawberries, honey bees, and homemade jam were the perfect elements! My first step was to reimagine the jar from the Pins and Needles set, shortening it quite a bit using a partial die-cutting technique and coloring the center area with Copic markers. I also used a small blue blending brush to add subtle color to the outside of the jar, using whatever color had built up on my brush. For a more realistic look, I added strawberry seeds using a teeny tiny stamp from the Papertrey Ink Birthday Pops set and brown ink. I finished the jar with some decorative elements, including the jar topper and twine from the Honey Bee Jar set and an oval postage-edged label that I stamped with a sentiment and a small strawberry.

My next step was to create the background panel for my card. Starting with a Wheat cardstock panel, I die-cut it using the Handmade Quilt cover plate and then added subtle shading to the edges with Gathered Twigs ink before spattering the panel with white splatter medium. I attached the jam jar with foam squares and then got to work on the other elements of my card design.

I die-cut the components for the strawberries and the bees from colored cardstocks and added subtle shading to the strawberries and the leaves. Then I arranged everything on my card front, tucking some elements behind the jar, popping some things up with foam squares, and gluing others down with liquid glue. Finally, I attached the card front to a top-fold card base.

Thank you so much for stopping by and reading about my summertime mashup celebrating Spellbinder’s 23 years. Happy crafting!
