Hello! Today I’m sharing a Father’s Day card I made for my dad featuring Spellbinders Whale in a Bottle Large Die of the Month from June 2023. This whale makes a grand focal point for this all-black ocean scene I created using just a few ocean-themed die-cuts. A big bold font for the word “Dad” and a sprinkling of clear droplets finished this deep-sea card’s design. Take a peek at the supplies I used and then we’ll dive in!

If you like die-cutting, this card is for you. There is no stamping or inking of any kind—so no inky fingers! So to start, I die-cut all the elements for my design from colored cardstock. I choose blue, gray, and white for the whale pieces and black for everything else, including the background panel and the frame. I chose to do an all-black background because I didn’t want the whale to compete with anything else. I was actually hoping to use an embossing folder for the background, but I didn’t have one that fit the theme of the card, so I ended up doing the black on black, and I love how it turned out.
To assemble the card, I layered the rounded rectangle frame onto the background panel and arranged the smaller die-cuts around the whale. I carefully trimmed the coral die-cuts to lay flush with the frame, leaving space for the sentiment.
Before attaching the die-cut word “Dad,” I stacked three of them together to give the word some weight and dimension. The sub-sentiments are pre-printed, pre-cut sentiment strips that I decided to die-cut with a sentiment strip die anyway. This gave them the same embossed impressions as a stamped and die-cut sentiment strip. I layered these below the word “Dad” and finished with a few clear droplets for embellishment before attaching the card front to a top-fold card base.
